3D - Fad Or Is It Here To Stay?
Whilst I have been impressed with the little exposure I've had with 3D, I do have to ask if it is just another fad or is it here to stay? If I am not mistaken, this is the 4th attempt to bring 3D to the cinema and naturally, like all things cinema, it finds its way in to the home. However like all new technologies, there has to be engaging program readily available [at the right price] or the consumer will simply not support it.
Since its introduction, 3D has not been without its challenges and partly why each time, the format has failed. The capture "see it without glasses" [below] says it all and is probably 3D's biggest hurdle as the feedback I hear is the resistance to having to wear glasses to see 3D.
CinemaScope was introduced in 1952 and whilst it may have had a name change, it has always remained as part of modern cinema and now is being adopted into the home for CIH systems. 3D can also be made to work with an anamorphic lens.
